The Homeowner’s Guide to Water Pressure

A lot of plumbing issues within your home stem from problems with water pressure. This could lead to low pressure showers or toilet flushing issues on one hand, and damaged appliances or pipes to the contrary. Doing a water pressure check yourself is not difficult and could help you spot potential issues before they cause costly damage.

Standard Water Pressure

Depending on the location you reside in and where you reside, your water pressure can be very different as it flows through the municipal water supply lines. This could cause problems, since the psi rating can vary between 20 and up to 100. The water pressure that is incoming should not be higher than 75 psi. A lot of plumbing experts recommend 50 psi as a good threshold for pressure regulators, which is also the default setting of the majority of pressure regulators.

Larger houses require a higher pressure in the incoming system than smaller houses, since water pressure will slow down a bit each when it comes into contact with the pipe bend.

How to test water pressure

The easiest method to determine the pressure of your water at home is to measure the inflow pressure of city lines.

  1. Find the first faucet on the line of water that enters your home. This faucet has the greatest pressure and can tell you if pressure issues originate in your home or stem from municipal lines.
  2. Verify that there isn’t any water running through the home. It is possible to install shut-off valves on toilets or faucets if you intend to exclude them in the testing.
  3. Shut off the valve that shuts off the main one.
  4. Connect a tension indicator in the water faucet.
  5. Completely turn on the faucet to read the pressure.

You can also try other faucets within the home with the same technique to find issues with the pressure in the home once you know the pressure rating that was initially set. This is especially helpful in situations where you have to get a plumber to inspect the pipes since it offers a smaller area to find the root of the pressure issues.

The Pressure Test for Existing Plumbing

It’s fairly easy to check your plumbing for leaks with a test of water pressure. A different option is to use air, but this is typically reserved for plumbing that is brand new. It will require an air compressor as well as an adapter that connects the compressor pipe to a threaded faucet. To test the air pressure it is necessary to perform the following steps:

  1. Find the valve that shuts off water to your home, and shut off your water source.
  2. Use your faucet to drain the pipes. Make sure that the water is turned off after the pipes have been emptied.
  3. Connect an air tension gauge to an faucet with a threaded fitting. It could be in the laundry room or out in the outdoors.
  4. Connect an adaptor to a different faucet and connect the compressor hose.
  5. Charge the system up to a maximum of 60 psi, and then wait 15 minutes.
  6. Make sure the pressure hasn’t dropped (indicating the presence of a leak) before switching the water back on.

New Pressure Test for Pressure in the Plumbing

Testing new plumbing with air can be more complex than testing plumbing that is already in use, however, it is more efficient. You’ll need test balloons as well as test weenies that are inflatable gadgets equipped with tension gauges connected. Test kits are available for purchase at a cost, or you could opt to purchase the components from a hardware shop.

  1. Eliminate all exhaust pipe fittings (commonly called DWV pipes) as well as toilet fittings with the test balloons that are inflatable. It is recommended to place them into the T-fittings prior to inflating.
  2. Attach test caps of glue to the top of the stub-out pipes. These pipes are affixed to the floor or walls for fittings later to be connected to, for example, shower heads.
  3. Find a clean-out fitting and then insert the test weenie. Make sure that your measurement is level and easily readable prior to inflation.
  4. Increase the pressure inside the pipes up to five psi , then wait for 15 minutes. Check the pipes periodically to see if there are any pressure changes.

If you suspect that there is a leak then you can make use of colored smoke or look at the pipes for sounds that could indicate the presence of a leak. Alternately, you could place some dish soap that has been diluted on the joints and wait for bubbles of air to form.

Low Water Pressure

A low pressure can be annoying. It’s not just that it makes your faucets gurgle and slow your washer, but it could cause issues in your toilet or an indication of a larger issue. Fortunately, low pressure is usually easily diagnosed and treated without calling for expert assistance.

What are the causes of low pressure in water?

There are a myriad of reasons for low pressure, many which can be easily fixed. Here are a few of the most common issues:

  • Single Faucet It is usually caused by the build-up of debris on the filter’s screen. The screen is usually situated at the bottom of the faucet, but there is also there is one within the base. Rinse and then wipe away the debris and it will improve the flow of water immediately.
  • Shut-Off Valve A typical cause of low pressure. There is a shut-off valve that covers the entire home , and also those connecting to the sinks, toilets and so on. If they are not fully open these valves can impede your water flow, which can reduce pressure.
  • Pressure Reduction Valvee Some cities supply water at high pressures and your home could be equipped with a pressure reduction valve fitted to reduce the water pressure. The standard for factory installations is typically 50 psi, however it could have been lower set by an earlier owner or simply is too low to adequately provide a larger house. Modifying the settings can often solve the issue.
  • Leaks Low pressure may be an indication of pipes that are leaky. Do a pressure test, and then check your gauge for indications of leaks. If the pressure fluctuates it is possible to engage a professional to repair and locate the pipe that is damaged.

How to Increase the Low Municipal Water Pressure

In certain instances you might find that your water pressure isn’t as high due to municipal lines. This can impact your neighbors and necessitate an installation for a pressure booster. The equipment consists of a pump as well as a pressure tank that is located close to the water meters.

A dial lets you alter the pressure from 45 and 55 PSI, while the tank is able to store additional pressurized water to limit the frequency at which the pump has to be running. Pressure booster systems can be expensive, typically costing $900 or more however, it could be the only solution for lower municipal pressure.

High Pressure Water

Although low pressure in water can be a problem however, high pressure can turn into an absolute nightmare. It can cause leaks, pipes that burst and burst boilers, tanks for water, as well as issues like flooding or the growth of mold. There are many indications of excessive pressure in the water, and you should check the psi value when you notice these signs:

  • The process of turning a faucet on or off can cause loud noises or banging that originate from pipes.
  • Leaks and splashes from the faucets.
  • Toilets may run even when they’re not being used.
  • More expensive sewage or water bills without increasing the amount of water consumed.

This is due to the fact that more water is being used at the same time as pipes with lower pressure. So, running a faucet when the pressure of your water is 150 psi, you could use two to three times as much water compared to have if the pressure were only 50 psi.

What causes high Water Pressure?

The most frequent reason for high pressure water is due to the municipal supply. Based on the demands in your region the water provider may require water to be delivered at the highest pressure. This is particularly the case when they are required to serve large buildings or areas above sea levels.

Another possibility is that of thermal expansion. Temperatures in your house could be responsible for heating the pipes, but only to a minimal extent. Furthermore, your water heater could make the water expand little. The more hot the water is, the greater pressure it exerts over the pipes. This is why it is best to maintain your water heater at a moderate to low temperature.

How to reduce water pressure

If you are confronted with excessive pressure from municipal water the best way to deal with it is to install the Pressure reduction valve. The valve connects to the point where water comes into your home , and it reduces the pressure that is incoming. It’s typically set to 50 PSI, but you are able to alter the pressure setting to permit an increase in psi.
