If you reside in a suburban or rural property that isn’t connected to the sewer system of municipal utility installing a septic tank may seem to be the most obvious option.

As efficient as septic systems may be however, they do not apply to every scenario. In areas where the soil is too thin or dense, or the level of the water table can be too elevated, or another reason prevents the installation of the toilet alternative options can meet local requirements and also keep the surrounding area free of pollutants.

Plastic Leach Field Chamber

The system is based on a conventional septic tank. However, instead of the traditional pipe leach field the leach field is composed from interlocking polyethylene arches, which create a continuous drainage space. The chambers provide an empty space for the effluent to pass through meaning there is no need for dirt as well as geotextile. If you’d prefer the materials are added to increase the longevity of the system.

These systems are simple and simple to set up, and they require minimal equipment. Since they require smaller areas than those using traditional leach fields, they’re perfect for smaller building sites, and their installation is minimally disruptive to the landscape. They’re also generally more durable than traditional systems.

Mound Septic System

Raised bed and Mound-based septics have a lot in common as conventional systems with the exception they are designed to form an area in which the effluent is treated. The lined filter bed made of sand is among the most well-known options. In this type of system, tiny distribution pipes are inserted into the gravel layer that is laid over an sand-based layer. The entire area is completely covered with top soil, forming an earthen mound.

In addition, the system has a dosing chamber to collect the wastewater that exits the tank for septic. The chamber releases effluent in the prescribed rate to avoid over-dosing the field of leach. In many devices, an alarm goes off in the event of a malfunctioning pump which puts the Leach Field in risk.

The observation tube has been set up to allow an inspection without having to access the port through the soil. Monitoring wells are constructed so the conditions of the leach field are easily monitored.

Advanced Material Media Filtration

They use materials such as peat, sand or synthetic textiles to remove effluent prior to releasing it to the field of leach. They’re not only able to be placed in areas where conventional systems can’t be, but they’re also much more affordable in areas in which gravel isn’t readily accessible.

Sand filters are one of the most well-known of these. A sand filter is an enclosed box that is filled of concrete or PVC and filled with sand. This box is generally installed in the ground but it is also possible to set it over the ground if needed.

The effluent will be discharged from a dosing chamber on the filter, and then taken to the bottom of the filter before being then pumped into the field of leaching. Certain systems are able to recirculate the effluent several times before it is released to the field of leach.

Geotextiles are an alternative option to filter effluent. The squares of specialized geotextiles can be laid out horizontally, or hang vertically inside containers. Septic systems is able to recirculate effluent through the fabric before pumping it to the leach fields. Geotextiles are able to hold more water than peat or sand and therefore systems that utilize the material need less space in order to treat the same quantity of effluent. This makes the Geotextile system an excellent option for those with limited space.

Not as widely used, but equally effective are the open-celled polyurethane cubes. They are packed in containers and can be sold as media filter systems packaged. In regions that don’t have hard freezes these cubes are able to be placed on top of the in the ground.

Spray nozzles inject the effluent to the upper part of the. The system is easier to maintain as the top part that is made of cubes is able to easily be removed and replaced if it gets blocked.

Like all septic systems media filtering systems need regular maintenance. However, the precise requirements for maintenance differ according to the type of media used. Each type of system requires inspections during which the bed of the media is examined for indications that it’s time to be cleaned or replaced. Even with routine cleaning, the media filter systems will eventually become blocked and require replacement.

Drip Distribution System

A drip distribution or drip disposal system, the septic system has a similar structure to a standard septic system, however it has an aerobic chamber for pre-treatment and a filtering device that further treats the water. The treated water is delivered to a range of drip irrigation pipes to spread the water across a wide area. The water is safe to be used to water the lawn or other plants that are not edible. The plants remove nitrogen that is not needed out of the water and further making it more hygienic.

Since these drip pipes have been set close to the surface of the soil The system can be used in compact or shallow soils and also on steep inclines. In colder climates, however it is possible to freeze.

Aerobic Systems for Sewage Treatment

Aerobic septic systems, also known as ATUs are in essence tiny wastewater treatment facilities for residential use. They introduce oxygen into the septic system in order to promote the development of aerobic bacteria that are able to break down organic waste that is in the wastewater. This creates the effluent being cleaner.

The chamber’s aeration system injects oxygen into the sewagesystem, allowing organisms to reproduce and breakdown the waste. Solids go into the clarifier before being then recirculated into the Aeration chamber. The effluent, which is now free of organic waste, and hence smellless, is pumped into a chlorinator to disinfect. After being chlorinated, the pure water is transferred to an holding chamber that will be discharged in the future.

ATUs are an alternative to septic tanks for areas in which a traditional drain field cannot be constructed and allows one to provide wastewater treatment on sites that have even the most challenging soil or topographic conditions.

If your house is located in an area where the installation of an ordinary septic system is difficult, or even impossible, there are many options to consider. If space limitations or soil that is shallow is the primary problem, think about the possibility of a leach field chamber made of plastic or mound septic system. In cases where none of the above options will work an aerobic sewage treatment system can be an alternative.

Before you choose alternative septic systems But, it is important to talk with the local health department to learn what regulations local and state could be applicable to the system you’ve put in your mind.
